Passion of Christ I have always enjoyed reading the events which happened after the last supper in the Gospels. Jesus's betrayal, arrest, crucifixtion and resurrection. I found it to be inspiring and dramatic. Finally, somebody had the vision to make a movie highlighting these events and in Aramaic with English subtitle. There was much publicity over the Passion of the Christ which was directed by Mel Gibson who is a Catholic and therefore the movie was based on a view point of a Catholic. I was gripped by the movie. There was lots of scenes of brutality and torture and those with a weak stomach might not be able to take it. The scenes were believeable. The Pharisees hated Jesus for challenging the establishment and the system and conspire to bring charges against him. In Jesus's time , the land was under the jurisdiction of the Roman , so capital punishment could only be meted by the Roman authorities. When Jesus was handed to Pilate , he questioned Jesus and wanted to release him as there was no basis of charges. First , he sent Jesus to be flogged. Now these scenes were so brutal and heartbreaking. So much blood and gore spiling on the ground. After the flogging, Pilate asked that Jesus be released. But the crowd insisted that Jesus be crucify. You would think the crowd is so fickle. Earlier they had welcomed Jesus with open arms. Perphaps the Jews wanted a political leader who would lead a rebellion against the Romans and were disillusioned on learning otherwise.I believe Pilate did not want to cause further disturbance and unrest and thus obliged to the crowd's request. Throughout the whole process Jesus is subjected to so much pain and agony. A layperon with a open mind would seek to find out more about the Christian faith and thus take a first step towards accepting Christ as his Saviour. For a Christian like myself, the movie strengthens my faith and is inspirational. Critics may say there is too much emphasis on suffering and torturing but I believe it is trying to make a point that God is willing to sacrifice and die for our sins. Touching and compelling indeed.
